Girl attempts suicide, two held
A 16-year-old girl from Nashik attempted suicide by taking an overdose of sleeping pills after being molested in full public view by three men on Thursday. The matter came to light when the girl regained consciousness on Saturday and the Nashik Road police has arrested one of the trio. Strangely, the accused have been booked only for molestation and not for abetment to suicide.
According to the police, Reshma Kale (name changed as victim is a minor) stays in Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar area in Nashik Road. She consumed several sleeping pills on Thursday night, and was rushed to a municipal hospital in Nashik in an unconscious condition. Reshma regained consciousness on Saturday, after which the police recorded her statement.
“In her statement, she said that she was on her way home on Thursday evening when three men from her locality blocked her path. One of them, identified as Baban Jadhav, caught her hand and refused to let her go, with several people watching. He then told her that he would make life difficult for her as well as her father if she reported him to her family or to the police. Reshma reached home and consumed the sleeping pills immediately,” said an officer with the Nashik Road police.
Based on Reshma’s statement, the police traced and arrested Jadhav from his residence on Saturday night. One of his two accomplices, identified as Sunil Sonkamble, was also arrested. The search is on for his brother Pramod, who is absconding.
“The accused have been charged with molestation under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code. After being produced in court, they were granted bail,” said Dhanraj Dayama, senior police inspector, Nashik Road police station.

Mumbai, Oct. 21
The Gadchiroli police on Saturday arrested a man and his two accomplices for fraud from Tamil Nadu. The trio had set up an electronics shop in the Naxal-affected district and offered appliances at 45 per cent discount if booked in advance.
After several people, including shopkeepers, invested in the scheme, the conmen fled. The police, however, located the trio in Tamil Nadu and arrested them after chasing them for a fortnight. On October 4, S. Kumar Swami Subramaniam, Shahjahan Sheikh and N. Yuruoteshan started a shop named “Mariamman Traders” at Gadhchiroli’s camp area in Ramnagar.
“The trio started luring the locals by offering electronic appliances like television, refrigerator, cooler, fans, etc at a discount of 45 per cent. They demanded advance payments for the scheme and after collecting cash they fled,” said a police official from Gadchiroli police station.
