Girl jumps before train, survives
A 22-year-old’s bid to end her life by jumping off the platform before an approaching train failed even as the leading coach ran her over. Sabra Bano attempted suicide by coming under a local
train, which was pulling in at the Mahalaxmi railway station on Friday morning.
On seeing her approach the tracks, the alert motorman applied the brakes and the train stopped, but the lead coach ran her over. The railway staff along with the government railway police (GRP) took the girl to Nair Hospital where she was admitted for treatment. The hospital informed that the girl was suffering
from depression and shifted her to the psychiatry ward.
“Our motorman had spotted the girl standing at the danger edge of the platform and he was ready to apply the brakes. In order to raise an alarm, the motorman tried honking several times, but when she jumped in front of the train, he applied the brakes,” said Sunil Singh, PRO of Western Railway.
Senior police inspector of the Mumbai Central GRP, Rajendra Trivedi, said, “After we discovered her identity, we called up her father Isaralu Haq Ansari who had already filed a missing person’s complaint with the Worli police. The girl’s father informed us that she had been suffering from depression and had already taken an appointment with a doctor.”
Though the incident did not disrupt the railway services, the miraculous survival of the girl was lauded by the commuters who were present at the platform.
