Girl kills self after rapist uncle’s blackmail
The Nalasopara police is on the lookout for a 27-year-old man whose 19-year-old niece committed suicide by setting herself on fire because he allegedly raped her and got her pregnant.
The accused, Mohammad Sultan alias Raja, had also threatened to circulate her obscene photos and videos on the Internet, which compelled her to take the extreme step.
According to an official from the Nalasopara police, the incident took place on the evening of April 16 in a residential building at Nalasopara (east), where the victim lived with her mother, two sisters and brother-in-law. The family hails from Kolkata and had settled in Thane rural. On February 14, the victim’s uncle Raja made her unconscious and then raped her at her residence. The victim’s mother and sister were out of town at the time.
When the victim became pregnant, Raja started threatening her and asked her to abort the child; he also asked her to keep mum about the incident. Raja was unemployed, but would accompany mediapersons in the area.
On April 16, while the victim’s mother and sister were in the hall, she doused herself with kerosene from a stove and set herself on fire in the kitchen. She was rushed to Bhagwati Hospital and was shifted to Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central the next day. Three days later, on April 20, she succumbed to over 90 per cent burns. “In her dying declaration, the 19-year-old said that her uncle had raped her and threatened to put her obscene photos and videos on the Internet, if she mentioned his name. She was two months pregnant. We have taken samples from the DNA test to collect evidence against Raja,” said an official.
Assistant inspector, B.R. Hangirge of the Nalasopara police station confirmed the incident and said, “We have registered a case against Raja under several sections of the IPC. We are trying to trace him.”
