Goats on dhow to undergo surgery
The police is now planning to conduct a surgery upon five of the goats that were found aboard the dhow MSV Yusufi by the Coast Guard on April 3. The police sources said “suspicious foreign objects” were detected in the X-ray conducted last week and would be retrieved through a surgery conducted by veterinary doctors. The discovery has confirmed the police suspicion that the animals might have been used to carry “microchip-like” devices.
There were 30 goats on the dhow, out which one was thrown overboard because of illness and the other one was consumed. Three of the goats died a few days after the boat was caught as they had contracted a disease. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is currently guarding the animals.
A police source said, “Shadowy substances can be seen in some of the goats and it is imperative that we know what they are. We suspect that they could be metallic objects, but nothing can be said with certainty until the surgery is performed.”
The Coast Guard caught the boat a few miles of the Mumbai coast after a call being made by a banned Thuraya satellite phone was intercepted by security agencies. Around 400 cartons of imported cigarettes, mobile chargers and accessories and LCD TV sets, all dutiable goods, were seized. The customs department is also looking into the smuggling aspect as the goods were being brought into the country’s borders without paying the requisite duty.
