GPS tracking to ensure effective trash collection
Citizens can now upload pictures of unattended garbage in their area on the civic website to ensure effective garbage collection in the city.
The system is based on the global positioning system (GPS), and all garbage collection vehicles will be connected to it.
A geo-fencing will also be done around all the garbage bins so that civic officials, who monitor the website can check whether a collection vehicle has reached the point; timings of the entry and exit of the vehicles, within the fence will also be recorded.
“We receive several complaints from people about contractors not making regular trips to collect garbage. The system will ensure transparency in trash collection and also prevent manipulation by contractors,” said a civic official. The civic body has decided to undertake a pilot projects in two wards, Dadar and Goregaon, which will start from next week onwards. “Based on the performance of the trials, the project will be implemented in other wards,” he added.
Before the beginning of the monsoon this year, the BMC had also implemented the pothole-tracking system.
