Onions led DRI to red sanders
PARTH SATAM
Mumbai, July 16
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) observed a major error in Monday’s red sanders smuggling attempt at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust that confirmed their suspicions of contraband being present in the containers.
According to sources from the port, four of the eight containers, which had refrigeration facilities, had wrongly declared their contents as onions. “Officers realised that onions are not meant to be frozen, as they perish instantly. No genuine farmer or transporter will refrigerate onions, and will rather ensure that they are sufficiently ventilated. After seeing that the documentation on the four “reefer” containers said they contained onions, they became suspicious and immediately opened them to find red sanders. Subsequently, the remaining four regular containers were also opened, in which sandalwood was hidden,” said a JNPT source.
The other four had declared tiles and marbles as their contents.
The containers were parked at the DRT Container Freight Station (CFS) of the JNPT. The smaller 20 feet-long reefer containers carried neatly cut and polished Red Sanders, while the other four had raw and uncut logs of sandalwood. DRI sources also stated that the names of the consignors, and the consignee, in the documentation were faked, along with the “Import-Export” code.
