IIT-B’s TechOlympics to attract top colleges

As a prelude to the IIT-B’s technological extravaganza Techfest 2013, the organisers have introduced TechOlympics, which will be held across six cities in the country. Top teams from TechOlympics will be given an opportunity to compete with each other and showcase their technological prowess in Techfest 2013.

Throwing light on the new initiative, Shrey Singh, manager Techfest 2013 said that the idea was to encourage students from non-IIT engineering institutions to showcase their talent, and also give them an opportunity to compete with the best.
“The competition is just an outcome, the main aim is to exchange thoughts and ideas as well as expose students to different technological developments in the country,” Mr Singh
said.
The competition will be in two stages and have categories namely Line following, Grid Master, Aqua Robotics, Pirate Wars, Aero Modelling-Hover On, Coding-Program’m-able. While the first stage will comprise qualifying rounds in the institutes at the select cities, the second round consists of the finals that will be held at the
IIT-B campus in Powai during Techfest 2013 from January 3-5.
The top two teams from each category from each city will then be asked to travel to Mumbai wherein they will compete for a cash prize of `4 lakh. Winners will also be given certificates of excellence from IIT-B.
“Techfest has been growing every year and last year we had a footfall of 92,000 students from Mumbai
and other parts of the country. TechOlympics is an attempt to increase the number manifold and and discover talent from different parts of the country,” Mr Singh said.
In Mumbai, the event will start on October 14 at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel College of Engineering.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
