‘Install CCTVs on major highways’
The Bombay high court on Wednesday suggested that the state install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras on all major highways across the state to curb the number of accidents taking place.
A division bench of Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice A.P. Bhangale was hearing a public interest litigation filed by the Association for Aiding Justice.
The NGO was seeking the court’s direction to the state, to put a system in place and ensure that the victims of accidents on the highway get medical aid on time. The PIL had stated that if the victim does not receive medical aid within an hour, the victim might lose his or her life.
Darius Khambata, the Advocate General, informed the court that there is already such a system in place. The court then suggested that the state install CCTV cameras on all major highways and expressways across the state. The HC also suggested that a clause be inserted in the highway tenders to contractors, directing them to also install cameras.
“Today, there is no discipline on highways and expressways. The vehicles tend to zig-zag around heavy vehicles. Installation of CCTV cameras on these roads will help curb accidents. The travellers will be aware that there are CCTV cameras and will avoid speeding too,” the bench obser-ved.
The court then directed the state to consider its suggestion and file a reply within two weeks.
