IPL: Cops bust betting racket, arrest bookies
The Mumbai police crime branch busted a betting racket and arrested two bookies who were reportedly betting over an IPL match at an ice-cream parlour in Borivali on Thursday.
The police has also seized materials used by the accused for running the racket.
The arrested accused have been identified as 48-year-old Kantilal Shah alias Kanti Fatakada and 51-year-old Mohammed Ibrahim Shaikh.
According to the police, the ice-cream parlour at Sai Darshan House Building in suburban Borivali was raided by the crime branch unit-11 team at around 10.30 pm.
The team was working on a tip-off that a few bookies have placed bets on the IPL cricket match. Shah and Shaikh were then caught red-handed while placing bets on the match between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Daredevils at Delhi on Thursday.
The crime branch officials seized a laptop, a television, five cellphones and `53,650 in cash.
“The accused have been arrested under relevant sections of Gambling Act and Indian Telegraph Act, and were produced before a court on Friday. The court remanded the duo to police custody till April 22,” said police inspector Praveen Kadam of unit-11.
Mr Kadam added that they were trying to get the cellphone call details of the accused to know more about their racket and their connections with other bookies.
“We would also check whether the accused were in contact with other international bookies to bet on IPL matches or not,” added Mr Kadam.
