Khans get police summons
The police issued summons to Khan brothers Sohail and Arbaaz on Tuesday in connection with an accident in which a 70-year-old woman was killed late on Monday night by a car owned by Arbaaz and driven by Sohail’s driver Dhananjay Pimple.
R. Aher, inspector at Bandra police station, said, “A policeman went to Sohail’s residence at 4 pm on Tuesday and was told that Sohail was not in the city. Besides, when we contacted Arbaaz’s personal assistant, he said that Arbaaz was not in the city either. We have left a message for the duo and we will get in touch with them once they are back in the city.”
Fearing trouble Pimple initially fled the crime scene but surrendered before the Bandra police station. Later, he was placed under arrest and produced before a court here. He was granted bail on a surety of `10,000 and his license was also returned. “We would wait for 15 to 20 days for family members of the deceased to claim the body. In case nobody turns up, the police will conduct the last rites,” an officer said, adding that the actors could attend the funeral if they wanted.
Preliminary reports indicated that Pimple was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of mishap. However, the sample has been sent to forensic lab and the result is awaited.

Compensation for girl hangs in balance

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday directed its officials to conduct an inquiry in the case of the unnatural death of 24-year-old Ashwini Satpute after a tree had fallen on her at Lower Parel.
According to civic officials, the tree was located inside the premises of a corporate complex – Marathon NextGen Realty, who were also given the permission to trim it. Ashwini was entering the premises, when a tree fell on her. She later succumbed to her injuries at KEM Hospital.
However, standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale said, “We have asked the BMC officials to hold an inquiry into this case as there were also complaints from the Marathon group. If they are proven correct, compensation will be given to Aswhini’s family.”
According to BMC’s compensation policy in tree falling cases, if the victim dies, the family is given a compensation of `1lakh. If the victim becomes disabled, he/she will get a minimum compensation of `25,000 and a maximum of `75,000.
