Kid drowns at resort pool, 3 held
The Arnala police arrested the owner, manager and lifeguard of Patil Resort near Arnala beach in Virar after a 12-year-old boy drowned in one of their swimming pools on Monday afternoon.
Nikhil Deepak Makhvana had come to the resort with his parents Deepak and Jyoti, and brother Shrutik (14).
According to the police, the incident took place at around 3.30 pm. There are two swimming pools in the resort, one for adults and the second one for minors. Nikhil was playing in the pool meant for minors, which is about four feet deep. The family lives in Dahisar (east).
While playing in the water, Nikhil slipped and water entered his mouth, after which he lost consciousness. He was pulled out of the swimming pool and efforts were made to revive him by pressing his chest. Nikhil was later rushed to Mahalaxmi Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Assistant inspector, Priyatama Muthe, said, “We have arrested the owner Ritesh Patil (27), manager Haresh Patil (23) and Diago D’Silva (35).”

Preparations for malhar begin

The organisers of ‘Malhar’, one of the biggest and oldest college festivals in the city, announced the launch of the festival preparations on Tuesday. The organisers assured that the event would live up to its past accolades and aim at being limitless, broadening horizons to attain even bigger outcome.
Pooja Dewoolkar, chairperson of Malhar 2013 said, “This year we introduce not only new events but we are tweaking old events and starting out something new, keeping in mind every person to encompass the spirit of participation. We have refreshing new events, an engrossing line up of speakers, overwhelming performances and inspiring exhibitions.”
She added, “The conclave balances out Malhar, to create a platform for the young enthusiasts to debate about relevant issues. There will be talks that are intellectually stimulating by eminent personalities, who have made a difference against all odds. We will explore also explore social causes. All this makes Malhar a multi-dimensional fest.”
Vice-chairperson (conclave) Chirag Goel said, “This year the conclave aims to go a step ahead. With few structural changes, we aim to connect with a wider audience and discuss everyday issues.”
