Killer mom’s trial from Oct. 15
The Sewri fast track court will commence the trial to prosecute 26-year-old Deepika Parmar who had allegedly killed her newborn baby girl, from October 15 onwards. Parmar had thrown her daughter from KEM Hospital’s bathroom window.
Defence advocate Devendra Yadav maintains that his client has not committed any crime, as she was suffering from prenatal depression, and according to law, the acts committed under depression cannot be termed as crime. Mr Yadav added, “Dr Shubhangi Parkar, head of the psychiatry department at KEM Hospital has accepted that Deepika was being treated for depression.”
However, the prosecution, on the other hand, has provided the defence with a list of 15 witnesses, who would be examined in the case. They include a regional medical officer (RMO) of KEM Hospital, department chiefs, some policemen and a security guard of the hospital, who had first found the baby’s body. However, the prosecution has not added Dr Parkar in the list of the witness.
When asked if Mr Yadav would ask Dr Parkar to appear as defence witness in the case, he said he cannot say anything about it at this stage. He said, “I had filed an application before the court seeking to direct the prosecution to provide him with a copy of the CD, which has the CCTV footage from KEM obtained by the prosecution as an evidence.”
