Knocked down, sr citizen dies of grievous injuries
A senior citizen was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Uran, Navi Mumbai on Tuesday night, the police said. An unidentified motorist knocked down the 65-year-old man while he was crossing the street and fled from the spot instead of rendering help.
According to the Uran police, the incident took place at around 7.15 pm on the road to Vashani from Uran. The deceased, Abhimanyu Dattatrey Patil, was crossing the road to reach the bus stop when the unidentified vehicle rammed into him.
Due to the impact, Patil was flung and suffered head injuries. Passersby rushed Patil to a nearby clinic, but as he had suffered grievous injuries, he was rushed to Uran Rural Hospital, which is located at a distance of over 10 kilometres from the spot. Soon after being admitted, Patil was declared dead.
“There are no CCTV cameras in the vicinity. We have registered a case of death due to negligence under Section 304 A of the Indian Penal Code against the unidentified accused. We are making queries with the eyewitnesses who rushed the victim to the hospital to get leads in the case,” said investigating official, sub-inspector R.M. Patil of Uran police station.

Boy killed on suspicion of lost phone

A man has been arrested for killing an 18-year-old as he suspected the boy of stealing his cellphone in Kurla on Tuesday night. The accused was in an inebriated state at the time of the incident and got into an argument with the boy. The assailant in known to be a menace in the locality and was arrested a few hours after the incident.
The victim, Sunil Gupta, is a resident of a chawl in Jeevawadi Lane near a matchstick factory at Kurla (west). “The victim was standing below his residence with a few friends when the accused, Sunil Thitte (38), reached the spot in an inebriated state. He had been drinking in a local bar when he realised his cellphone was missing,” said senior police inspector Laxman Bhalerao. Thitte started began screaming at Gupta and accused him of stealing the phone, but the latter denied any role. “The argument soon escalated and Thitte began manhandling Gupta. He suddenly whipped out a kitchen knife and began stabbing Gupta on the chest. The victim collapsed and Thitte fled from the spot,” Mr Bhalerao added.
