Kurla, Borivali station tracks turn death traps
Kurla station on Central Railway and Borivali station on Western Railway have turned out to be death traps with most number of people dying there on tracks in 2012. These people died due to line crossing, falling in the gap, falling from running trains, dashing against poles and other reasons.
As per statistics compiled by Mumbai Railway Police Commissionerate, 459 passengers (20%) lost their lives at Kurla station while 339 passengers (27%) died at Borivali station.
Reacting to the statistics, Anil Sharma, inspector general RPF of Central Railway said, “We have enhanced our vigil and these fatalities will come down in future when escalators will be installed at stations.”
Mahim Swami, inspector general RPF Western Railway said, “We have brought down the cases of trespassing after our PRO department did a survey to find out chronic spots for trespassing and we deployed our jawans.”

2 ‘bookies’ held for accepting bets in Borivali

The Borivali police late on Tuesday evening raided an apartment in Borivali (west) and arrested two alleged bookies for accepting bets when the second one-day international cricket match between India and England was being played.
According to the Borivali police, the raid was conducted at around 7.30 pm at the Bhushan Heritage building in Padma Nagar area of Chikoo Wadi.
The accused have been identified as Ashish Ashok Shivhari (28) and Dayashankar Dayaram Shivhari (38) who had taken the flat on rent for the last few months.
The duo has been accepting bets on cellphones and landlines for the past few months, but had managed to evade arrest. The police is also trying to trace their customers.
The accused have been booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, Gambling Act and the Telegraph Act.
“They were produced in a magistrate’s court and remanded to police custody till January 19,” said police inspector, Shyam Parulekar of Borivali police station.
The police has seized two television sets, eleven cellphones, two landlines, four SIM cards, three calculators, two laptops and `4,537, along with some documents in the raid.
