London Tube-like expertise for Metro
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is set to gain valuable experience from the oldest metro system of the world — London Underground, as a memorandum of understanding was signed on Monday between the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Transport for London (TfL). The MoU is for a period of two years.
The MMRDA plans to have nine metro corridors covering 146 km, including a 33-km underground Metro between Colaba-Bandra-Seepz. Currently, the MMRDA does not have experience of creating an underground Metro system.
The MoU will be useful in exchange of information and personnel for transfer of latest technology in the field of Metro Rail systems. The other areas that will immensely help MMRDA will be in the exchange of staff and setting up of an organisational structure to operate Metro Rails of the MMR. The signing of the MoU is part of UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s visit to India, along with a business delegation.
During the signing of the MoU, Mr Cameron and Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan also discussed about amenities for new projects, cities and districts along the 1,000-km corridor between Mumbai and Bengaluru.
“The UK business community’s participation in mega infrastructure initiatives will definitely encourage us to plan
more such initiatives for the development of Mumbai. Our vision is to transform Mumbai in to a world-class metropolis with globally comparable infrastructure and quality of life. For this, comprehensive transport and business plans have been prepared. It is estimated that US$ 40 billion investment in transport and civic infrastructure will be needed for the same,” said Mr Chavan.
TfL operates the London underground Metro, which is the second largest Metro service.
