Loopholes in safety audits: MMRDA
The MMRDA officials said on Wednesday that the safety audits done at construction sites aren’t foolproof and there are slips in reviewing it. As a result of Tuesday’s accident at Marol, where one labourer died and 16 others were injured, work on Metro rail site on the entire 11.07 km stretch has been suspended for a couple of days to conduct safety review.
“All safety audits carried out during the construction of the infrastructure projects are not 100 per cent. There are some loopholes, for example the supervisor visits one place in the morning and then heads to another location, so nobody can expect him to keep an eye on everything all the time,” said P.R.K. Murthy, chief of transport and communication, MMRDA. The MMRDA has also formed a two member technical committee of Prof. K. Rao from IIT, Mumbai and chief engineer of PWD S.D. Tamshekar to look into the incident.
Reliance Infrastructure led consortium Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) too has formed an internal committee to probe the accident and would file a report to the MMRDA within a fortnight.
“Work has been suspended on the entire corridor for a few days so that comprehensive safety review can be done. It is only after the process work will resume,” said S.V.R. Srinivas, additional metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA.
