Man attacks ‘wife’ with knife, held

The VP Road police has arrested a 25-year-old man, who attacked his wife with a knife at least five times over an extramarital affair issue, in the VP Road area on Sunday. The accused was trying to flee to his hometown in UP, but was arrested within three hours of the incident. The victim has been admitted to the JJ Hospital.
The arrested accused has been identified as Haider Mehboob Tahasildar, a resident of Patte Bapu Road and son of a restaurant owner who is also an activist in a political party. Haider, who helps his father in his restaurant business, has two daughters from wife Zubaida (name changed), a native of Howrah and is a sex worker. Both have been living together for more than five years, but are not legally married, said the police.
On Sunday, a fight between them over Zubaida’s suspected illicit relationship took an ugly turn and Haider attacked her with a kitchen knife. He slashed her five times on the chest, shoulders and waist in front of their two daughters. Haider fled the scene immediately and neighbors rushed Zubaida to JJ Hospital.
“The victim is out of danger and we have registered a case under Section 326 of the IPC against Haider. Preliminary probe revealed that Haider suspected that the victim had married a man named Raju and this lead to a heated argument between them. We are checking the legality of the their marriage and also verifying claims made by both, the victim and the accused,” said PI K. Kale of VP Road police station.

Strong water currents make aksa deadly
Age correspondent
Mumbai, may 5

The three-km long Aksa beach is considered as one of the most dangerous beaches because of the strong undercurrents of water. The floor of the beach is flat and there is a slope that causes the person to get pulled deeper into the sea. In addition to this, there are several spots that have quicksand, which escalates the problem.
According to fire brigade officials, there are six lifeguards posted at the beach. But, at the time of the incident only two lifeguards were present. The two lifeguards present at the beach were permanent lifeguards, while the other four were on contract and on leave.
There are about 30 lifeguards posted across six beaches in the city. With no woman showing interest, the BMC’s plans to recruit women as lifeguards came a cropper.
An internal report prepared by the MFB says that swimming at beaches like Walkeshwar-Worli, Dadar Chowpatty, Mahim, Bandra to Khar, Aksa, Manori, Gorai and Marve is dangerous. But, Juhu beach and Girgaum Chowpatty are considered to be safe for swimming. The report has been compiled after taking into account the nature of water currents, pollution levels, rockiness, etc.
