Man gets 10 yrs for chain-snatching
The Thane sessions court on Friday convicted and sentenced an accused to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for chain-snatching. He was also charged with attempt to murder and sentenced to 10 years of additional jail term along with a fine of `1,000. Both the terms are to run simultaneously. Ten years is the maximum sentence that can be handed out to a chain-snatcher.
On May 4, 2009, the accused Mohamad Hussain Khayum Sheikh (20) had snatched the gold chain of an elderly lady, Draupadibai Luka Patil (65). Ms Patil was on her way home in Bhiwandi in the Thane district. When he tried to run, Ms Patil’s son Jayendra and her nephew Shivaji Balaram Patil tried to stop him and also chased him down the road.
However, they stopped when Sheikh pulled out a gun and fired at the duo. Having narrowly escaped the bullets, the duo informed a police officer standing nearby. Having assumed that the police had not spotted him, Sheikh jumped into a water tank and tried to hide from the police. The police then forced him out of the tank and arrested him.
While passing the order, Thane additional sessions judge A.A. Sayeed relied on the witness of the duo, Jaydeep and Shivaji. He also relied on the statement of the victim, Ms Patil. He also noted that the additional public prosecutor Hemlata Deshmukh had proved the offence without a doubt.
Sheikh was convicted under various sections of the IPC for chain-snatching and attempt to murder. However, the accused was discharged of the offences under the Arms Act and Mumbai Police Act, which were not proved by
the prosecution.
