Man injured in 7/11 blast dies
Almost nine years after the serial train blasts in the city, which took place on July 7, 2006, one of the two victims passed away on Thursday evening. The serial blasts had claimed 209 lives and left around 700 injured.
One of the victims was 26-year-old Amit Singh, who was admitted to Jaslok Hospital and remained there, in coma, till he breathed his last.
Confirming the demise of Singh, chief executive officer of Jaslok Hospital Dr (Col) R.R. Pulgaonkar said, “It is true that Mr Singh passed away this (Thursday) evening. It is a very sad moment for us. In these nine years he had become family. In my career spanning over 30 years, I have never seen a patient who has had such a long stay in the hospital. It feels like a personal loss.”
The hospital from its side extended various benefits to Singh’s family, including free accommodation for the family in the hospital and transportation of Singh’s body to Virar. “We had a contract with the Western Railway for treatment of the blast victims. Under the contract we extended every support the family and the patient required. Besides things like free accommodation to the family and like today we made arrangements for his body to be taken home, which was not part of the contract.”
During his stay at the high dependence unit of Jaslok Hospital, senior politicians visited him on blast anniversaries promising help. So far the entire cost of his hospitalisation was borne by the Western Railway board. Singh’s parents were not available for a comment.
