Jagdish Damodar Ghadiya, (57), had parked his car near Apna Bazaar at the Bazaar Gate area in Dongri. Mr Ghadiya and his wife had gone to a nearby building over a business deal, while his friend and broker Hitesh Rasiklal Sanghvi was still in the car.
According to the statement given to the police, at around 5 pm, a person came near the vehicle and dropped a few `10 notes and asked Mr Sanghvi whether the notes belonged to him. The victim, lured by the prospect of claiming the money, got out of the car, said the police. Cashing on the opportunity literally, the man grabbed the bag containing money and laptop, kept on the backseat. The accused, after committing the theft, disappeared from the sight in a jiffy.
Mr Sanghvi immediately informed Mr Ghadiya about being conned. Subsequently, Mr Ghadiya filed a complaint with the MRA Marg police station. Mr Ghadiya, who deals in plastic materials, is a resident of Plilant Park in the Yogi Hill area of Mulund.
“The accused had unsuccessfully tried the same trick with two or three people, but finally succeeded with Mr Sanghvi. We are examining the CCTV footage from the Bank of Maharashtra branch opposite to where the incident took place. There are also a few eyewitnesses, who had apparently seen the accused. We are trying to prepare sketches on the description they give. The accused will be nabbed soon,” said senior police inspector Padmakar Juikar from the MRA Marg police station.
The police said that Mr Ghadiya had gone to finalise the purchase of an apartment, and was carrying `37 lakh as advance payment in the suitcase.
