Man who stole phones from hostel held
The Cuffe Parade police have arrested a thief who used to steal cellphones, cash and valuables from Manora MLA Hostel in Colaba. The police has recovered the stolen cellphones from him. Investigations revealed that he had made similar thefts in Jalgaon, Powai, Sion. To escape arrest, the accused would commit theft and would go to Jain temples and sleep. The police suspect his involvement in many other theft cases in the city. The arrested accused has been identified as Nilesh Prafullachand Karnawat, 28, a native of Pachori, Jalgaon.
According to the police, on August 29, 2012, one Prakash Waghmare lodged a theft case against an unknown accused with Cuffe Parade police. Waghmare is a resident of Nagpur and had come to Mumbai for some work. In his complaint, he told police that during his stay in Manora MLA Hostel, on the night of August 28, 2012, an unknown person entered his room and escaped with his mobile phone and some cash. Two other people were also sleeping in the same room.
“We initiated a probe and after tracing the IMEI number of the cellphone, we recently got to know that accused is hiding in a Jain Temple in Dadar. We then arrested Karnawat. We have recovered the stolen booty worth `38,300 from him,” said Sunil Kavlekar, assistant commissioner of police (Colaba division).
