Masina Hospital staff protests for salary dues
Over 400 workers at Masina Hospital staged a violent agitation on Friday to protest against the delay in the payment of their salaries.
Angry workers forced the hospital administrator out of the premises and also attacked the newly-appointed human resources (HR) officer, because he had put up the notice for the delay in payment of salaries for the current month.
Having suffered huge losses, the hospital has been struggling to make payments. In fact, due to financial constraints, the hospital authorities even had to shut down the pathology department.
One of the protesting workers, requesting anonymity, said, “While the management has been delaying our salaries for the past four to five months, top officials have been happily pocketing their dues on time. They tell us this delay has
something to do with the shutting down of the pathology lab. We don’t see the connection. We staged a protest after our first shift. Though the hospital administrator came to talk to us, we cannot deal with her anymore, and will not let her enter the hospital on Saturday.”
Medical director of the hospital Dr Rohinton Dastur said, “We are a charitable trust hospital and over years, we have suffered a loss of `21 crore, and we still continue to be in the same state. In fact, we even had to break some of the savings to release salaries to our workers. There are things we want
to do to improve the situation, but the unions go on and strike preventing us from taking the necessary steps. If they don’t allow the hospital administration to function, how am I going to run the hospital?”
