Metro mishap: Engineer, supervisor held
The Sahar police on Thursday arrested the engineer and the site supervisor in the Metro Rail bridge collapse case. The police said that it is now recording the statements of few other officials working on the project and more arrests are likely soon.
Sachin Krishnakant Walvekar, the engineer and Kalicharan Khadkeshwar Patra, the site supervisor have been arrested by the police. “We have booked them for negligence and are now recording the statements of other people; we may make further arrests in due course,” said Nam-deo Chavan, deputy commissioner of police, Zone 8.
A senior officer from the Khar police station said that the duo was arrested as initial investigations revealed that the iron rods used to support the bridge, were not strong enough.
According to another officer, the police has now called in for purchase bills of the material used for the construction. “We will be asking for the purchase invoices to ascertain the quality of material that was used. We will probe whether any inferior quality goods were used and in case they are, we will take further action,” he said.
The police has also called upon a few civil engineers in the state government to check the site and examine the quality of construction.
