Mhada officers acting like autocrats: PAC
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Thursday lambasted the arbitrary attitude of housing body Mhada and its officials in the state Assembly on Thursday. PAC chairman Girish Bapat said that there was a big mess in the Mhada administration and Mhada officers were behaving like “autocrats”.
While tabling its 14th report after question hour, Mr Bapat said, “The Mhada officials are negligent in their approach. They do not care for anyone. Even after asking several times the officers didn’t respond to PAC. This shows their high-handedness and how arbitrary they are in their attitude.”
He said that the government agency was facing a severe staff crunch. The accounting system being used by them is outdated and at least 100 years old. Since 1966-67 some 6,000 to 7,000 tenements have not been distributed. Open lands have remained vacant for years and have been encroached upon.
“PAC has raised more than 721 subjects related to the functioning of Mhada, but action has been taken in only 342 subjects. It means around 400 subjects were simply ignored. As a result, we sometimes feel why we work in this committee,” Mr Bapat said, disappointedly. He pointed out that Mhada had started purchasing lands at market rates, which, according to him, was a cause of concern, as the concept of Mhada was to build affordable houses. He expressed his fear on how Mhada would build affordable houses if it purchased lands at market rates.
