Mild tremors hit Gujarat, Maharashtra
The western part of India namely Maharashtra and Gujarat on Saturday experienced slight to moderate tremors. No loss of property or life was reported. The Indian meteorological department (IMD) said these tremors are not unusual, and about 13,000 these occur annually all over the world.
At around 10.58 am on Saturday, a tremor measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale was recorded 213 kilometres away from Mumbai in Satara. Slight shocks were experienced in the city as well in different parts of the state.
Biswombhar Singh, director of the IMD, in Colaba said, “While the first tremor measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale occurred in Gujarat at around 8.53 am, the one in Maharashtra was reported at around 10.58 am. The Gujarat tremor occurred in Bhuj and was a slight, while the one in Satara was moderate.”
According to an MET department official, no loss was reported as the tremors recorded were well below 6 on Richter scale. Some parts in Mumbai including Ballard Pier, Kurla, Chembur, Vashi, Santa Cruz, and the interiors of Andheri are said to have experienced aftershocks.
Meanwhile, the earthquakes started trending on Twitter early in the day, with people mostly expressing their safety concerns. Even celebrities including actor Amitabh Bachchan tweeted saying, “Earthquake in Mumbai !! Did you feel it .. I did ! Shutters and building shook twice for few seconds .. all good here .. all else ? I hope and pray everyone is safe !! happy Baisakhi, noboborsho, bihu to all .. peace and happiness .. stay well !”
