MMRDA bungles rehab policy
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has two different resettlement and rehabilitation policies for two different projects.
The MMRDA has decided to rehabilitate around 700 project affected persons (PAPs) of the Sahar elevated access Road in Andheri (east) in far off Kurla, whereas the PAPs of the Milan rail overbridge would be rehabilitated in Vile Parle (east) itself.
As per the new resettlement and rehabilitation policy, PAPs should be rehabilitated within the vicinity.
According to a MMRDA official, around 700 PAPs of the Sahar elevated access Road project will be rehabilitated as per the rehabilitation policy of the MM-RDA.
The rehabilitation will be carried out by the Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (Mial) with MMRDA as a coordinating agency. These PAPs are the residents of Baman Vada, Ambedkar Nagar and Rajaram Wadi near the Western Express Highway.
The project is 60 per cent complete and the rehabilitation process of the PAPs will start soon.
“The MMRDA has decided to begin the remaining work on the Sahar project once these PAPs are rehabilitated at a site in Kurla,” said Ms Ashwini Bhide, joint metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA.
Interestingly, the 325 PAPs of the Milan rail overbridge project of the MMRDA are being resettled within the vicinity, in Vile Parle (east) by the MMRDA. As per the request of the MMRDA, the civic body has handed over the land in Vile Parle (east) to the MMRDA. The development authority has already started preliminary work for the construction of the building for the PAPs.
The Sahar elevated access Road project is a six-lane elevated road, which will have four entry and two exit points. The length of the proposed road is 2 km and the cost of the project is Rs 287.37 crore. This road is funded under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
The project is under the World Bank funded Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project (MUIP). This project will help ease the traffic congestion at the Sahar Junction under the Andheri flyover and Sahar Road.
