The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has set up control rooms for its various projects for the approaching monsoon. The MMRDA has established separate control rooms for the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro Rail corridor, the Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle monorail corridor and other projects such as flyovers, widening of roads, skywalks etc. that are being undertaken by the authority.
Apart from setting up the control rooms, the MMRDA will also ensure that all the its projects are patrolled around the clock. “The contractors have been asked to strictly adhere to safety measures. They have also been instructed to stringently follow norms as far as the barricading, repair work of damaged roads, clearing of the dirt on roads, disposal of the dirt etc.,” said Ms Ashwini Bhide, joint metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA.
“The MMRDA will also ensure clear signage and lighting arrangements around all the construction sites. There will be more than 25 site offices that will remain connected with the control rooms, apart from the patrolling teams,” said Mr Dilip Kawathkar, joint project director, public relations, MMRDA.
The information received by the central control rooms will be disseminated to the concerned site offices and the patrolling squads from where immediate relief will be provided wherever required. Each site office will be equipped with engineers and support staff besides the required machinery such as excavators, dumpers, vans equipped with equipment for labourers, cold mix, carbon core etc.
Mumbaikars will be able to seek help from the control rooms on various aspects such as uprooting of trees, water logging, accidents, traffic snarls, etc. According to the plans of the MMRDA, the control rooms will work in tandem with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Mumbai Traffic Police, Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking, Mumbai Fire Brigade and other agencies.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
