Monorail likely to be ready by September end
The first and final level of the trial run for the country’s first-ever monorail will be held in June and if everything goes as planned, it will start running from September end this year.
“We have to follow three levels of testing before the commissioning rakes of the monorail. The level 3 testing has been done and we are close to finishing level 2, too. The first and final level of testing will begin from June this year,” said a senior engineer from Scomi Engineering, the Malaysian infrastructure firm that is building the Monorail with L&T.
MMRDA additional metropolitan commissioner Ashwini Bhide, who attended the test run on Thursday, said, “Our efforts are going in the expected direction and we believe that we will be able to get the first phase of the monorail running by the end of September this year.”
Talking about the security of women on the monorail, Ms Bhide said, “We could have a ‘ladies special monorail’ if the situation arises, but we don’t have such plans for now. We have installed 336 CCTV cameras and talks are on with the state government to provide security at a larger level.”
Replying to a question that the MMRDA failed to plan the routes in the projects as it passes through deserted areas, MMRDA metropolitan commissioner U.P.S. Madan said, “Initially it may have been the case, but with the construction of the monorail, 133 housing redevelopment projects are coming up parallel to this stretch. By the end of it, the entire stretch will be in great demand.”
