Monorail site: Beam slips again
A beam slipped while it was being launched at the monorail under-construction site between Naigaon and Ambedkar Nagar stations at around 5.30 am. However, no one was injured in the incident. The officials, engineers and traffic police reached the site and diverted the traffic immediately to avoid any traffic congestion. “Since there was very little traffic on the road when the incident took place, it did not create much trouble for the passengers,” said an official. Within an hour, the beam was brought down onto the trailer and later on was shifted from the spot of incident and left at a suitable location nearby. The road was then opened to the traffic.
According to an official from MMRDA, “The Contractors M/s L&T and M/s Scomi consortium and the Consultants M/s Louis Berger Group visited and conducted on-the-spot inquiry of the incident and have submitted the report.”
While Dilip Kawathkar, joint director (projects) said, “The beam lifting was in progress using two cranes — hydraulic and lattice boom. During lifting, the wire rope of the hydraulic crane got entangled with the metallic structure fixed with the pier 1E29. Neither the lifting superviser, nor the signalman realised that the wire rope was entangled due to the heavy rains. The crane operator continued to lift the beam by winding the rope. The rope snapped and one end of the beam rested on the body of the hydraulic crane. The lattice boom crane held the other end of the beam. The front side body of the crane and also the beam has been damaged.”
This is not the first case when mishaps have occurred on the monorail site. Earlier on July 1, 2011, two people were killed and two others injured when a slab of the had collapsed.
