Monthly booking for public grounds
To prevent misuse in the allotment of public grounds for political rallies and social events, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is planning to prepare a new policy, in which grounds can be booked on a monthly basis, and not for the entire year.
According to this policy, the earlier allotments of public grounds will stand cancelled and the interested parties will have to book them on a fresh basis. Since this booking will be done on a monthly basis, these parties will not be able to reserve the grounds for the entire year.
In the meeting held at the civic headquarters, it was decided to do away with the method of allowing the reservation of grounds for the entire year.
“The grounds will be given on rent in the first 15 days of every month. In the event of more than one application received for the same day, the decision will be taken with the help of a lottery system,” said the official.
“The new policy is aimed at avoiding the misuse of public grounds given on rent. It will be ready within a week,” said S.S. Shinde, deputy municipal commissioner (gardens).
A senior civic official on the condition of anonymity said, “The civic body can rent the public grounds for a period of 30 days in a year for various events. However, in the absence of a definite policy, some political parties and organisations were found misusing this for their own benefit.”
State Congress committee spokesperson Sachin Sawant had made a demand to the municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte that the BMC review the allotment policy of public grounds.
