MU to donate `10L towards drought relief
The management council of University of Mumbai has sanctioned `10 lakh towards relief for drought-affected areas in the state. The management council, in its meeting on Friday, also exhorted the University to find more ways to collect funds to contribute towards alleviating the problems of the regions hit by water scarcity.
Speaking about the initiative, Dilip Karande, member, management council said that even though the summer season was a good month or two away, many regions in the state were reeling under the problem of water shortage. “Many localities in the Thane district, which comes under the jurisdiction of the University, have also been affected and hence it was unanimously decided to contribute towards alleviating their problem,” said Mr Karande.
The motion was seconded by another management council member, Dr Vijay Joshi, principal of Somaiya College. According to sources, Dr Joshi’s institution has been working in rural areas, encouraging youngsters to explore technological innovations in their daily life within the limited resources available to them.
Apart from the allocated funds, Mr Karande said that the University has also been asked to get the university staff to contribute a day’s salary towards the corpus. “We have also asked the University to ask teachers to donate a day’s salary, but not to force them to do so if they are unwilling,” said Mr Karande.
A similar initiative is also expected to be started by the University, wherein students and other stakeholders will be asked to contribute whatever amount they want to for the relief work. “The Univ- ersity will be issuing a circular regarding the same to all its 650 affiliated colleges in the coming week,” said a university official.
