Naxal killed in gunfire, 2 Armymen hurt
Two commandos suffered bullet injuries in a gun-battle with Naxals in a forest area near Marartola village in the Gondia district of east Maharastra late on Sunday night. A Naxalite was reportedly killed, while another grievously injured in the shootout. The two commandos are said to be out of danger.
Acting on a tip-off, the commandos reached the spot in the forest, about 500 metres from the village at around 9.30 pm, where about 15 Naxals were having a meeting with the Marartola villagers to brainwash and recruit them for their mission.
According to an official, the Naxals were armed with self-loading rifles that were stolen from the local police in the past. The team of 20 C-60 commandos managed to spot the Naxals in the dark and opened fire at them, killing one of them. The gun-battle went on for at least 30 minutes.
The Naxals shot back in retaliation, injuring two commandos, identified as 29-year-old Sanjay Katre, who suffered a bullet injury to his hand and 28-year-old Ramesh Ukey, who suffered a leg injury.
Superintendent of Gondia, Dilip Zelke informed that both the commandos were out of danger and recuperating at a hospital in Gondia.
Even though the police believe that a Naxal has been killed, Mr Zelke confirmed that they have not found his body. It is learnt that other Naxals may have buried the body or left with it. All the Naxals managed to escape and the search operations are going on to find them.
