NCW meets CM over Aug. 11 rally
The committee constituted by the National Comm-ission of Women, New Delhi, to probe the attack on women during the Azad Maidan riots, on Tuesday met chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, commissioner of police Dr Satyapal Singh and other senior officers of the crime branch. The members of the committee also met the victims of molestation and made some suggestions to the state.
The commission visited the city and saw the audiovisuals and CCTV footage of the incident and had a detailed discussion with Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police, crime, Niket Kaushik, additional commissioner, crime and the two women officers of the Special Investigating Team.
Mamta Sharma, chairperson for the NCW, in a letter addressed to the CM on Tuesday gave a list of seven suggestions to be implemented after the incident. The preliminary recommendations made by the committee include that the case be tried in a fast track court and that a special public prosecutor be appointed to represent the state. The committee also suggested that while the injured police personnel on duty should be given adequate financial compensation, body protection jackets should be introduced during field operations for women police.
The committee further suggested provision of infrastructure for women police like hostel, mess, baby crèches, day care centres, washrooms and restrooms be made during training and after appointment.
The CM assured said. “The attack on the women police was deplorable…the culprits will be brought to book,” he said. The CM also told the commission that though the police had made elaborate security arrangements for the Azad Maidan rally on August 11, the attack on women police was unexpected.
