New medical college to come up in Govandi
The BMC proposed to set up a new medical college in Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi to improve medical services in the eastern suburbs. This will be in addition to the existing three medical colleges in the city and a proposed one in the western suburbs.
Additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said, “The proposal to set up a medical college at Shatabdi Hospital, Govandi, is under BMC’s consideration. Its financial provision is expected to happen in the next year’s budget.”
According to civic sources, the facilities at Shatabdi Hospital will be upgraded soon for setting up a medical college. The BMC has already undertaken construction of a new medical college at the Dr RN Cooper Hospital, Vile Parle. This is in addition to the medical colleges at KEM, Nair and Sion Hospitals.
“Considering the substantial increase in population in the suburbs over the last two decades, setting up a medical college here would ease the burden on the present crumbling civic hospital infrastructure and patients from the suburbs will be able to avail medical facilities nearby,” a senior civic official said.
As many as 100 students will get admission annually once the college starts and around 100 lecturers, professors and associate professors will also be appointed. Cooper Hospital has a capacity of 520 beds and fulfills the terms and conditions of the Indian Medical Council to start a medical college with a potential to admit 100 students for MBBS.
“The first phase of Cooper Hospital medical college is almost complete and it will start within next two-three months,” said former civic health committee chairperson, Rajul Patel.
