No chargesheet yet in Saif brawl
Almost three months after actor Saif Ali Khan got into a brawl with South Africa-based NRI businessman Iqbal Sharma at Wasabi in Hotel Taj Mahal Palace and Towers, the Colaba police is yet to file a chargesheet in the case. While the police completed investigation in the case long ago, officers from the police station seem to give bizarre reasons for not having filed the chargesheet yet.
On February 22, Mr Khan was arrested in the case but later released on bail the same evening. The police had recorded the statements of the victims along with two waiters and manager of a restaurant, who were eyewitnesses to the incident. While the restaurant did not have CCTV cameras installed, the police had recovered footage of the actor’s entry and exit from the gate of Hotel Taj.
When asked why the chargesheet had not yet been filed, an officer from Colaba police station said that they had not received the medical report of the victim from the hospital. “Mr Sharma was taken to GT Hospital after he lodged the complaint, but we are yet to receive the medical report. We have not been able to get the report yet because the doctors of the hospital went on leave,” the officer said on condition of anonymity.
When contacted, Mumbai police PRO Nisar Tamboli said, “I have not looked at the case papers, so it will not be appropriate for me to comment on the case.”
This is not the first time that the police has come up with strange reasons for not filing a chargesheet in the case. Earlier, the officers had cited reasons like President Pratibha Patil’s visit, senior officers going on leave and officers leaving for training, as the reasons for the delay.
