‘Not bound to agree with govt’
The Nationalist Congress Party may be a coalition partner in the Democratic Front government, but that won’t stop it from posing hurdles in the implementation of the state’s decisions that it feels “are not in public interest”.
NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik on Thursday said, “It is not binding upon the party to have the same stand as that of the government. Our leaders can question the government on issues of people’s welfare.” Mr Malik was answering a question in connection with an alleged statement made by chief minister Prithviraj Chavan in Srinagar. Mr Chavan had allegedly said that the NCP was facing problems posed by contractors close to ministers.
“The report in newspapers is all that we have seen. Unless we see the actual recording of the speech it would be unwise to comment on the matter,” said Mr Malik.
Dismissing the allegations made by Shiv Sena executive chief Uddhav Thackeray that Mr Ajit Pawar resigned knowing fully well that the irrigation scam papers perished in the Mantralaya fire, Mr Malik said, “Mr Uddhav Thackeray has no knowledge about where various departments in the Mantralaya were located. The irrigation department was on the second floor. The fire took place on the fourth floor and moved upwards.”
Meanwhile, the NCP has left it to the local leaders to decide whether or not to have an alliance with anyone in the forthcoming elections to 10 Nagar Parishads. Local politicians will be given a free hand to decide whether or not to go with Congress, but they will be advised not to go with any non-secular forces, the party spokesperson said.
