Now take, upload videos of potholes
If you thought merely posting a photo was not enough to tackle issue of potholes, you can now post video recordings of roads in your area and upload them on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) pothole-tracking website.
Till now, Mumbaikars could only upload photos on the pothole tracking system. However, in a bid to address citizen’s complaints more effectively, the civic body decided to provide the facility.
Additional municipal commissioner Aseem Gupta said, “A photograph does not cover bigger areas, hence it cannot be used to show long stretches of pothole-ridden roads. Uploading video clips will give us a fair idea of the extent of the problem and consequently we will take adequate, and immediate action.”
The pothole-tracking system allows people to upload pothole pictures on the system website and the BMC attends to the issue within 48 hours. People are then sent a reply through SMSes, intimating them on compliance report.
Under the system, a photo of a pothole spot can be clicked or recorded using an Android phone and can be uploaded on the website www.voiceofcitizen.com. Later, the civic engineers, in whose jurisdiction the pothole site falls, assign the repair work to the contractor.
According to the civic officials, the pothole-tracking system, introduced in November 2011, brought good results. During last monsoon, 26,000 potholes were reported by the system, out of which over 24,000 were filled.
However, the system also attracted controversy after civic engineers pointed out several loopholes in it. Subsequently, the pothole filling works were delayed last year and the
engineers, and contractors were also penalised.
