The Sion police had recently initiated investigation after registering an offence under the Information Technology Act.
According to a police source, Bhavin Patel (name changed) recently received a friend request from an unknown female on an online messenger and he accepted it. She was using a yahoo e-mail ID. Soon, Mr Patel developed a “close” relationship with her online.
“Recently, Mr Patel had a long online conversation with the accused using video chatting facility, during which, Mr Patel was asked to take off all his clothes by his friend,” sources said. “Mr Patel was also asked to wear ladies’ under garments and dance.
But, as the conversation between the two got over, Mr Patel received a major jolt. The accused told him that she had video recorded the entire session using the recording application on the messenger”.
She then started blackmailing Mr Patel. The accused demanded `80,000 from Mr Patel and threatened to send the recorded video to his relatives and also upload it on a social networking site, if he fails to meet the demands.
Mr Patel, who recently got married, was afraid that his wife would learn of the incident. So, he decided to approach the police and launched a complaint on February 2.
An officer said, “We are trying to trace the IP address of the system, which the accused used. There is a possibility of more than one person involved in this case.
The main accused could be a male, who posed as a female to trap the victim” The investigators are also taking help from the cyber police experts.
The senior inspector of Sion police, Baburao Gaavit said, “A case under relevant Sections of Information and Technology Act was registered and police inspector Vinod Gadankush is investigating the case.”
However, Mr Gadankush refused to divulge information and said that the case is under investigation.
