Onion prices plummet in Nashik’s APMC markets
Onion prices in Nashik markets plummeted as fresh “pol” onion arrived in the state. Prices dropped by an average of `900 in various Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) yards in Nashik. “The fresh onions in Nashik, Ahmednagar and Pune APMCs have affected the prices,” Nanasaheb Patil, newly elected chairman of Lasalgaon APMC told The Asian Age.
In Lasalgaon APMC, onions were traded for an average of `4,300 compared to Thursday’s `5,201 per quintal — a difference of `901. The highest price on Friday was `4,789 per quintal, compared to yesterday’s `5,626 per quintal — a difference of `837 per quintal. In Umrane APMC, which had witnessed record prices within the week, the highest price offered was `4,573 per quintal, compared to `5,700 per quintal on Thursday. The lowest offer was `500 per quintal in Satana APMC. However, in Satana the highest offer was `4,805 per quintal and an average of `4,100 per quintal. The highest price on Thursday was `5,675 per quintal.
“A surplus onion harvest has been registered in Bengaluru and some southern states. Onions are being sent to other states after local demands are met. About 130 trucks arrived in Pune and 100 trucks in Ahmednagar from other places. This swiftly
lowered onion prices. Secondly, a large
consignment of onion from China has arrived at Vashi and is awaiting clearance. Once this onion hits the
market, you can imagine the prices,” Mr Patil stated.
