Onlooker dies while witnessing train stunt; duo held
In an incident that has once again highlighted the perils of performing death-defying stunts on local trains, a 26-year-old passenger lost his life, when he was accidentally hit, while witnessing one such stunt on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased, Maqbool Ansari (30), worked as an AC repairer in a private firm.
According to the police, the incident took place at around 2 pm, when two 20-year-old youth Mohit Narayan Singh and Bhavani Bhopal Singh, residents of Kurur village, were performing stunts while leaning out of a Borivali-bound slow local.
The duo was hitting passengers, who were leaning from trains coming from the opposite direction. However, things went horribly wrong when an unidentified person from a train coming from the opposite direction tried to hit these youth back.
“The victim Ansari was standing very close to them. When their train approached Goregaon, a passenger in a Churchgate-bound local tried to hit the duo. However, the duo ducked and the man hit Ansari instead, flinging him straight onto the tracks,” said P.M Karyakarte, senior inspector of Borivali Government Railway Police (GRP).
Ansari sustained grievous injuries to his head and legs. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot itself.
The furious passengers roughed up the duo; they were later handed over to the Borivali GRP, where they were placed under arrest. The duo has been booked under Section 304 (a) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC)) for causing death due to negligence. The duo was produced before a magistrate’s court on Thursday that has remanded the two to judicial custody.
According to a GRP official, such stunts are widely performed by youth on local trains; they mostly try and hit passengers travelling in trains coming from the opposite direction.
