Opp: SIT probe in irrigation scam
The Opposition in both the houses of the Maharashtra legislature on Wednesday demanded a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the irrigation scam in the state. Protests and slogan shouting by the Opposition through the day, forced adjournments of both houses with very little work being carried out.
In the legislative Assembly, BJP’s Devendra Phadnavis raised the issue of the irrigation scam. All other MLAs of major Opposition parties took to the well of the House and started shouting slogans against the government over the alleged corruption in irrigation projects. Deputy speaker of the Assembly, Vasant Purkhe, adjourned the House till Thursday morning.
However, the Opposition MLAs from BJP, Shiv Sena and MNS held demonstrations outside the Assembly building.
In the legislative council, Shiv Sena, BJP and PWP members gathered in the well and shouted slogans demanding a SIT probe into the alleged irrigation scam. The upper House was also adjourned with very little work completed from the day’s agenda.
Opposition parties have come out with a “black paper” to counter the whitepaper brought out last month by the state water resources ministry, claiming that the government document was a dud as it sidestepped the irregularities in irrigation projects. The document was released jointly by the BJP, Shiv Sena, MNS and PWP in Nagpur on the eve of the Winter Session of the state legislature.
