Peddar Road witnesses 4th cave-in
The spate of cave-ins at Peddar Road continued, after a part of the road, near Cadbury House fell in on Tuesday afternoon. The mishap forced the traffic from Peddar Road to Haji Ali to be diverted through Tardeo.
According to civic officials, the road caved in at around 1 pm because of a leak from an underground storm-water drain (SWD) that created a two-feet deep crater. To facilitate repair work, traffic on the northern direction of Peddar Road was diverted to other roads, which caused a huge traffic snarl. “The cave-in occurred due to the leakage from underground drains that caused the soil to erode. The repair work will continue till late on Tuesday evening,” said an official from the civic roads department.
The leakage from the century-old underground SWD has been one of the prime reasons for cave-ins on Peddar Road. Three cave-ins have been reported on the road in the last four months. According to BMC officials, considering the growing traffic on the road, these age-old utilities need to be replaced immediately. Unless they are replaced with new lines, Peddar Road residents and commuters will continue to endure cave-in problems.
“To resolve this problem permanently, the underground utilities need to be replaced once and for all. For this, the road has to be closed down for at least 10 days to nearly a month,” an official said.
