Pickpocket dies in cop custody in Chembur
A 43-year-old alleged pickpocket died on Saturday night of head injuries while in the custody of Chembur police. The police has claimed that the detainee banged his head on a wall and window in the detection room and died of serious head injuries. However, two constables were suspended with immediate effect and crime branch officials have been asked to conduct an investigation in the case.
The deceased has been identified as Mohammed Naushad Hussain Khan, a resident of Nehru Nagar, Kurla (east).
According to the police, Khan was detained on Saturday evening for questioning in a property case and was kept in the detection room of the Chembur police station. “In the night, all of sudden he started banging his head on the grilled window and fell unconscious. There were two more accused inside the room, brought in for other criminal cases, and they actually witnessed the entire incident. They informed the two constables posted outside and Khan was then rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead. His body was later sent to JJ Hospital for post-mortem,” said an officer.
Two police constables at Chembur police station — Dilip Sawant and Sanjay Dehala — were then immediately suspended by additional commissioner of East region. DCP (detection-1) Ambadas Pote confirmed the suspension of constables and said, “Crime branch Unit 6 was also asked to conduct a probe in the matter.” Mr Pote added, “Khan was an expert pickpocket and had many cases against him.”
Senior inspector of Unit 6, Shripad Kale said, “During our investigation, it has come to light that Khan himself banged his head on the wall and the grills of the window. The two other men (their names have been kept secret as they will be made witnesses) present in the room have confirmed the same thing in their statement. So far, no role of constables has cropped up in the probe.”
