PTA turns to transport commissioner
Parent-teacher associations have decided to appeal to the transport commissioner and request him to take action against errant bus operators who do not follow safety norms.
The Regional Transport Office (RTO), incidentally, has already launched a safery checking programme for school buses. The bus operators are livid and are terming these checks as “harassment”. They have further threatened to surrender all 9,000 buses before the RTO offices on Saturdays and Sundays if the checks go on.
Anuj Kumar Pandey, secretary of All India Federation of PTA said, “Firstly, we appeal to bus operators not to play with the future of students as exam sessions are approaching. They should let the RTO officials do their job. We plan to meet state transport commissioner Shailesh Sharma and request him to not buckle under pressure.”
Anil Garg, president of School Bus Owners Association says that the RTO officers are victimising them.
“Why do they check the safety standards of buses only in the month of February and March only when exams are near? We have accepted 20 policies out of 27, and those that are not acceptable are being heard in court,” he said, adding that even speed governors had not been approved for CNG-operated buses. “It has nothing to do with inconveniencing students,” he said.
“The bus operators issue is a big mental harassment for the lakhs of parents and guardians,” said Arundhati Chavan, president of the Parent-teacher associations United Forum.
