Racy romance novels flavour of the season
They aren’t publicised. Neither is there any form of readings for them. But rummage through the bookstores and you’ll find dozens of paperbacks, written by what looks like a factory of authors, on the subjects of love, longing and sex. The titles range from Lust Emperor to You, Us and Him, and are racier reads than those infamous porn ‘traveller’s companions’ of yore.
The sex content is quite sanitised actually, the emphasis being largely on kissing under the moonlight or canoodling at lonely beaches. Not all bookstores stock them, but I did come across a stack of them at the Om Outlet at Phoenix Mall.
And on questioning the store’s manager, I learnt that the books are favoured by the early-teen readers with a taste for the Mills & Boon flavour. Romances are the bestsellers today, he added, followed by light, comedy-sprinkled dramas, and collections of the Khushwant Singh-brand of jokes. Heh heh.
