Railways seeks joint action force
To curb the increasing cases of trespassing on railway tracks, the Railways has floated the idea of a joint task force with various authorities including the BMC, TMC, MMRDA, Cidco or MSRTC.
“Trespassing has always been a serious issue to be dealt with and the railway administration has taken many steps to tackle it; unfortunately we have not been able to implement it due to many constraints. Now, time has come for Railways and concerned authorities to take proactive steps jointly,” said Subodh Jain, general manager of Central Railway and member of electrical Railway Board.
He added, “We took many steps to curb trespassing, including deployment of GRP and RPF, fencing at a few stations, but yet there are always cases of trespassing that manage to slip through the gaps. East to west connectivity is also a part of the trespassing problem, so we would like to form a joint action group with BMC, TMC, MMRDA, MSRTC and Cidco, since they are owners of the land which we are connecting.”
Every year, around 3,500 persons are killed and an equal number of passengers get injured on the Mumbai suburban train network. Almost 15-20 per cent of them are victims of trespassing.
