Rains help check pothole-repair technology
Heavy rains in the city have finally given the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation an opportunity to evaluate the much-touted cold-mix technology for pothole repairs.
The civic body has decided to conduct an audit of city roads in which it will inspect all the potholes repaired with cold-mix technology.
Additional municipal commissioner Aseem Gupta said, “An audit will be done for all roads…our team of engineers will visit the pothole spots and evaluate the cold-mix technology. Depending on this, the advantages or disadvantages of this technology will be assessed further.”
This was the first year that the BMC used cold-mix technology for repairing potholes. Following the repeated failure of hot-mix technology, the BMC introduced three new cold-mix technologies — wonder patch, patchmaker and road bond — to repair potholes. However, of the three, patchmaker was initially found to be ineffective in pothole-filling works during the monsoon. A senior civic official from roads department said, “We wanted to evaluate the cold-mix technology long time ago. However, lack of heavy rains had poured water on our plans. But now that it has been raining, the audit of roads will give us a fair idea about whether to continue with cold-mix technologies or not.”
