Rainwater harvesting: BMC says no to MNS
Citing Dadar’s Shivaji Park as a Costal Regulation Zone (CRZ) area, the BMC has denied permission to the MNS to construct rainwater harvesting mechanism system at the ground.
In a letter to the G/North ward office, local MNS corporator Sandeep Deshpande had sought permission to carry out a survey for implementing rainwater harvesting system at Shivaji Park. He had also agreed to raise the required manpower and finance for setting up the system.
However, stating that Shivaji Park falls under the CRZ area, the civic body has expressed its inability to sanction the project. According to the development plan (city) department officials, separate provision has been made for Mumbai CRZ area. To protect and preserve the green lung of the area, all open spaces, parks, gardens, playground indicated in the development plan have been categorised as a “no development zone”.
Objecting to the BMC’s decision, Mr Deshpande said, “Previously also construction at the Mahatma Gandhi swimming pool and Samyukta Maharashtra memorial in the Shivaji Park was allowed. They are opposing the rain water harvesting project only because MNS is pitching for it.”
Standing committee chairman and Shiv Sena leader Rahul Shewale said, “We have made compulsory rain water harvesting system at all construction sites. The BMC will soon implement it throughout the city.”
