Rare leopard skin worth `1.5L seized
The Kurla police seized a rare leopard skin worth around `1.50 lakh from a person on Tuesday night. The police found the 48-year-old man behaving suspiciously and stopped him during patrolling when the skin was found in his haversack. The skin was sent to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SNGP) officials, which said it is a skin of a ‘Leopard Cat’. The accused was arrested under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act.
The skin, which is 81 centimetres in length, covers the entire upper body of the animal from head to tail. A police patrol, found the person on the Labsha Marg near GSK Lodge in Kurla (west) at around 9 pm.
“He was moving about suspiciously when our officers asked him to stop. He was carrying a haversack, which was searched, and the skin was found. The accused, Bhagwan Bhagoji Sanas (48) has been arrested under Section 9, 39 and 51 of the WPA,” said senior police inspector Laxman Bhalerao of Kurla police station. The animal is protected under Schedule 1 of the WPA and its scientific name is cat-felis bengalensis.
