Real estate agent dupes doc, booked

A 52-year-old Borivali-based real estate agent was arrested on May 12 for allegedly duping a doctor of `30.34 lakh by claiming that he was a government agent and that he could get him a good property deal.
According to the Borivali police, accused Anees Hussain Avnalkar (52) had already been arrested in two cheating cases in 2002 by JJ Marg police in south Mumbai and again in 2011 by the DN Nagar police, where he had allegedly duped victims to the tune of over `1.5 crore.
In the latest case, Avnalkar contacted Dr Shaunak Thakar (30), a dentist and resident of Vile Parle and flashed an identity card and claimed that he was a government agent of the Urban Land Ceiling Scheme.
In 2010, the duo met at a hotel next to Borivali railway station. Avnalkar offered Dr Thakar a house at the Raheja Classic property in DN Nagar, Andheri (west) at a rate that was a lot lower than its market value.
After taking `30.34 lakh, Avnalkar gave him a fake government receipt to win his confidence. For two years, Avnalkar
kept Dr Thakar waiting, following which the latter approached the police.
”We traced Avnalkar on Sunday and arrested him for committing forgery and cheating. The Borivali magistrate’s court remanded him to our custody on Monday till May 18,” said assistant inspector Raees Shaikh. Avnalkar leads a lavish lifestyle and often travels by air. He is married and has children.
